Architect Preserves His Incredible Farmhouse From The 1800s Inside A Huge Airplane Hangar
Many people can relate to the feeling of wanting to preserve a home. Whether that be their childhood home or another home, sometimes the urge to preserve a home along with all of its memories can be powerful.
Unfortunately, for most of us the option of preservation isn’t always an option, and sometimes it’s simply necessary to move on. In this case, another creative solution was found.
Adam Kalkin is an architect, so he knows exactly what makes a house. He also knows the difference between a house and a home, and he put an incredible amount of effort into preserving his home.
Kalkin’s very unique dwelling is located in the woods outside of New Jersey, and it’s a sight to be seen. His original home is easily comparable to a quaint schoolhouse with some modern features and upgrades. It’s a comfortable blend of vintage design along with relatively modern aesthetics.
The structure was originally built all the way back in the 1800s, so it’s easy to understand Kalkin’s desire to preserve it. No doubt with all of those years comes to an extensive amount of history and memories.
Despite its age, the house has been preserved and maintained very well through the years. Kalkin being the creative mind that he is, however, decided that the house needs some additional protection. The end result is drastically different and incredibly unique.
To protect the house from all of the seasons, Kalkin built a huge airplane hangar that surrounds the whole house. It’s lost some of its original charms from the outside of the hangar as it simply looks like an enormous gray box, but the hangar features big windows so at least the beautiful nature outdoors can still be seen from the inside.
Most homes have a front yard with grass and possibly even a garden, but the Kalkin family has space for not only a second dining area but another living room as well. Kalkin took it one step further and designed even more useful space, including a total of nine extra rooms.
Inside the new structure, there’s now additional bedrooms, offices, and another bathroom that has spectacular windows scaling from the floor to the ceiling for more natural light. Imagine all that extra space!
Kalkin did comment that the new structure has somewhat of a “ship in a bottle” vibe, but ships in bottles are incredible feats just like this unique dwelling! It helps that the family can simply go outside the hangar and enjoy the woodsy area if they feel like they need some fresh air.

Kalkin’s ingenuity and creativity have to be admired as we’ve never seen anything like this! What do you think? Do you like the idea or think it’s crazy? Let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to share with your friends!
