The world is full of urban legends. Some are fun and some are frightening, but most are the latter. Some of the most famous examples of these are Bigfoot, the Lochness Monster, Ogopogo, the Moth Man, the Jersey Devil and much more. No matter where you live or who you know, there it little doubting that you have heard of at least a few of these legends.
But in addition to these famous examples from around the world, there are some terrifying one right here at home. The country is full of places that have urban legends surrounding them. Whether dark and winding highways and roads, old and legendary buildings or even towns or cities themselves, there are tons of creepy urban legends in the USA.
However, one of the scariest centers around the town of Dover, MA. This town is a relatively small, quiet and peaceful community but beginning in 1977, things changed a little bit. This is because starting in that year, there were a number of sightings of a strange and unusual creature. The sightings sent the town into a fury as people were concerned, curious and scared about what was going on.
This all began on the night of April 21st in 1977. A local youth named William Bartlett was driving down Farm Street when he allegedly saw a terrifyingly creepy creature with massive eyes, long and lanky fingers, with a pale body. The creature was menacingly perched atop a crumbling stone wall that resided on the side of the road.
Seeing this, Bartlett returned home and told his father what he had seen and even sketched out a drawing for his dad. But despite this strange sighting, neither William nor his father decided to report the discovery to the police, as they were scared that William’s story would not be believed by the authorities.
However, as it turned out, William was not the only person to see the creature that night. 15-year-old John Baxter saw it on the way home from his girlfriend’s house, tried to follow it into the woods, but lost it. He decided to go to the police with his discovery story and even drew them a sketch, one that looked very similar to Bartlett’s.
They very next day, a girl named Abbey Brabham also reported seeing the creature, which was now being called the “Dover Demon”. So now three different people in less than 24 hours had reported seeing a creepy creature in the quiet and peaceful town. As a result of these sightings in such as seemingly calm area, the story began to get national attention.
Some people chalked it up to a coordinated hoax by the three of them, while others claim that the three of them saw some animal and just mistook it for a demon. However, since that two-day period in 1977, people have continued to see the Dover Demon in the small town.
