There are a ton of haunted places in the USA and in a state with the history that Vermont has, it is no surprise that they have their fair share of haunted places there. But one that may stand out above all the rest for its haunted nature is the tunnel at the Hartness House Inn.
The Inn is located in Springfield in Vermont but is not your average Inn. The Inn has an underground tunnel and is full of history. But not only is it full of history, the place can still be explored through today if you dare.
But before we look at the Inn, let’s take a look at its namesake. The Inn is named after James Hartness, who was the owner of the home. Hartness was born in 1861 and was an inventor and engineer. He was also a mentor to other creators and inventors and helped with their machine tools. Later on, he eventually became the Governer of Vermont and stayed in the position from 1921-1923. He was also an early aviator and was actually the one responsible for helping to plan and build one of Vermont’s first airports.
He passed away in 1934, leaving his great house behind and it eventually became an Inn where people could stay. It didn’t undergo renovations until 1998 and then a few years later, in 2004, it began to take registrations for people to be able to stay there.
While the Inn itself is very cool and looks great, the real treasure of the place is the underground tunnels that run under the home. He created the series of underground tunnels under his home so he could work in peace. He also had a number of other rooms underground, including a library, a workshop, a study and a lounge. The Inn itself offers great views of Vermont and is a massive building located on 25 acres in the historic district on Springfield.
But while it looks very good on the outside and the inn portion of the house is beautiful, clean and feels safe, the underground tunnels are a different story. These tunnels in which Hartness spent hours and days of his life working are apparently haunted. There have been numerous different claims that the tunnels are haunted and people have had various supernatural appearances there. For example, objects often disappear and then will reappear in other places and the electricity will often turn off. If you want to experience these things for yourself, you’re in luck, as tunnel tours are offered every single day.
It really is kind of crazy how someplace so terrifying and haunted can reside under a place that is so beautiful. And the fact you can actually stay at the place, dine there and lodge there, is very cool. So if you are the type of person that likes to experience supernatural occurrences while also having a lovely place to stay, sleep and relax when you are not exploring, this looks like the perfect place for you.
