For many of us, the state of New York is full of amazing tourist attractions and is a destination that thousands flock to each and every year. But it would be unfair to only look at the good and not the bad. And while New York as a whole is a great place to be and live, there are also a few places that you wouldn’t want to walk alone after dark, such as these 10.
1. Newburgh
This remains the most dangerous city in New York. While the population and size of the city could lead you to think it is nice and quiet, there is actually a 1 in 68 chance you will be the victim of a violent crime here.
2. Niagra Falls
This one is very shocking to many people as it is one of the biggest attractions in the state. You have a 1 in 84 chance of falling victim to a violent crime here. Our advice is to check the falls out during the day.
3. Poughkeepsie
While the city is small, it has shocking numbers of violent crimes. With a 1 in 105 chance of being victimized by a violent offense, it is right up there with the worst places in the state.
4. Binghampton
While the city is minuscule, its statistics for violent crimes like rape, murder, and other crimes can’t be denied. You have a 1 in 144 chance of being victimized.
5. Rochester
Rochester is a relatively big city in the state of New York and is the biggest city on this list. And while there are some safe areas of the city, of course, there are also some rough ones. Here you have a 1 in 119 chance of falling victim to a violent crime.
6. Jamestown
Like a lot of other cities on this list, this place has a relatively low population which gives the aura of safety. People in this city have a 1 in 136 chance of being a victim of a violent crime in this city.
7. Schenectady
Despite having a ton of history throughout the city, this history often falls victim to crime as property crime is very high here. And in addition to that, there is also a 1 in 114 chance of having a violent crime committed against you.
8. Elmira
Despite being one of the smallest towns in the state and located in a rural area, it is still quite dangerous. While the violent crime rates are only about 1 in 318, theft is particularly common there.
9. Middletown
While its size is very small, Middletown is only safer than 14% of cities in the country. Every crime is a problem here, but especially violent ones as you have a 1 in 222 chance of being victimized.
10. Mount Vernon
While it is more safe overall than most cities in on this list, it still has a higher murder and violent crime rate than you would expect. You have a 1 in 139 chance of falling victim to a crime in this town.
