A soldier has won the hearts and minds of Facebook users all across the country after a photo was taken of him standing at attention in the pouring rain to salute a funeral procession passing through an intersection.

Capt. Jack Ursey, a soldier in Vine Grove, Kentucky, was captured in the moment of respect by Erin Hester as Ursey had leapt out of his car to salute the passing procession on July 6. Hester shared the touching image of Ursey to Facebook where it quickly went viral, amassing over 140,000 likes and 130,000 shares.

“I was completely touched by this today,” Hester wrote in her viral Facebook post. “A funeral procession was passing by and this soldier got out of his jeep to stand at attention in the pouring rain.”

WSMV caught up with Ursey, who told the station, “I was driving down the road. The weather was awful and I thought what terrible weather for the family to have to go through this, so I stopped and got out. I thought maybe, just maybe, it would lift their spirit just a little and show them that we care.”

Ursey was surprised many had made a big deal over the photo.

“It was the way I was raised,” said Ursey. “I didn’t think anything of it. I just wanted to do it and go on.”
