Summer is a wonderful time to go outside and enjoy all the beauty that nature has to offer. One activity that offers up an ability to enjoy all things summer is hiking. Hiking should be relaxing, enjoyable, and a way to spend some much needed time with nature. But some hikers who decided to step outside in New Jersey had the complete opposite of a nice time outside.

Hikers have been reporting to police since the end of June that the trail is set up with booby traps. Not just lighthearted pranks or strange trails set up for hikers and bikers, but rather dangerous situations for those trying to go for a ride or walk.

The trails offer up beautiful views of New York City, and those who are visiting can enjoy 11 miles of trails safe for anyone with a pair of hiking boots or a bike. It is a frequently visited destination for tourists and locals to enjoy the sights of the city while also being surrounded by a nature sanctuary. The recent discoveries, such as this wooden board, are anything but safe.

Not only are there dangerous pieces of wood like this found all around, but hikers have even found barbed wire! When seeing broken glass and barbed wire, one might brush it off as another person just littering. But when seeing something craftily created such as this wooden board, negligence is anything but the case! Not only could this be an expensive damage to a pricey bike, but hikers and bikers could find themselves seriously harmed if they run into any of these traps!

These findings are only the most obvious of those traps and potentially hazardous materials found along the trails. There could be many more things found that are harmful, so police warn those who might be visiting the trails to keep a very close eye out and also warn friends and family in the area.

Many people are aware enough to look down and be aware when hiking, so luckily no one has been seriously harmed in the process yet. However, police speculate most of these traps are set up to pop bicycle tires.

Why someone might want to do that is the most disturbing part. Perhaps there is someone lurking in the shadows, waiting for a vulnerable victim to be immobile, or maybe it’s just a bored teen who likes to watch people’s bikes brake down? Police are still unsure but are urging those in the area to be extra cautious.
