The #MeToo movement was started 10 years ago by Tarana Burke, despite many mistakenly crediting actress Alyssa Milano, who brought the campaign to new virality. In October 2017, following Weinstein-Gate, Milano wrote on Twitter, “Me too. Suggested by a friend: 'If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘Me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.'" Celebrities then came forward — in droves — to courageously open up about their own personal experiences with sexual harassment, in a move of year-defining solidarity. It prompted millions of regular women to open up, too, because this problem permeates every industry. Time magazine’s editor in chief, Edward Felsenthal, said in an interview on the Today Show recently that the #MeToo movement represented the “fastest-moving social change we’ve seen in decades.” He said this after a group of female activists of the #MeToo movement were named Time's "Person of the Year" for 2017. Many Twitter users noted that his comment negated the #BlackLivesMatter movement and its power and influence. While that’s a whole other article and narrative, for now let's not pit the two causes against one another. Instead, let's remember what Tarana Burke said about her catchphrase: “It wasn’t built to be a viral campaign of a hashtag that is here today and forgotten tomorrow, it was a catchphrase to be used from survivor to survivor to let folks know that they were not alone, and that a movement for radical healing was happening and possible.” Burke wants our children taught better, our women less discriminated against, and our world to be, simply put, equal. This is far from a complete list (many celebrities have tweeted #MeToo without explanation) and it will surely continue to expand.
