This once-magnificent railway station was the biggest in Europe when it was built in 1928. It’s located near Spain's border with France, and served as a popular hub for rich Europeans on vacation. [caption id="attachment_39054" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]

The railroad was used by Jews escaping occupied France, but soon the Nazis took over the station and planted a Swastika on its roof. The station reopened in the 1950s, but shut down completely in 1970 when a steamer derailed on its tracks. No one was killed, but the accident was enough to put the railroad out of commission. In 1985, the station was completely reused by Spanish physicists as the Canfranc Underground Astroparticle Laboratory. Its deep tunnels below the tracks made it ideal for testing, giving this old station a new life.
