At the height of mass immigration in the U.S., Ellis Island was one of the world’s largest ports of entry, and these photographs capture the incredible diversity of Ellis Island immigrants. As a clerk at Ellis Island from 1892-1925, Augustus Sherman took over 200 photographs of people passing through, many in the process of interrogation. Because many immigrants had to wait days or even weeks to be let in, the sense of fear and uncertainty is palpable in these photographs. These photos are crucial to understanding the extent and reality of America’s diverse national heritage. We must ensure that immigration does not lose its human face.
